ALL ACADEMY BALL - DECEMBER 2005

An All Service Academy Ball is a social event held jointly by the state or regional parents clubs of the five Federal Service Academies (US Military Academy, US Naval Academy, US Coast Guard Academy, US Merchant Marine Academy and US Air Force Academy).

The purpose of the All Service Academy Ball is to promote socialization and camaraderie among the Midshipmen and Cadets from the five academies, as well as to provide a social event families and friends may enjoy with their Midshipman or Cadet.

Our 22nd Annual All Academy Ball was held on December 30, 2005, at Oak Brook Hills Resort in Oak Brook, Illinois.  There was almost 700 people in attendance.  Music was provided by Brothers of Blues.  Midn Clea Vragel and Midn Evan Jones, both class of 2009, represented the USMMA for Presentation of Colors.   Midn Evan Jones represented the USMMA at the POW/MIA Table Presentation.  Jules Traut led the USMMA Academy Toast. Speaking of toasts, the souvenir stemware this year is stunning. Maryann & Greg Jones hosted the USMMA hospitality room.  Bob Rentner and John & Linda McShane participated on the All Academy Ball Committee for our parents club.

Next years All Academy Ball will be held on Friday, December 29, 2006.

POW/MIA Table from December 2005 All Academy Ball

The table you see before you tonight is set for those prisoners of war and missing in action who cannot be with us tonight. Let us reflect upon the number of missing in action...more than 89,000 since WWII. We stand with and honor each and every one of them here tonight.Their table is smaller than the others in the hall--symbolizing the frailty of one prisoner alone against his oppressors. The table is round--because our concern for them will never end. The tablecloth is white--reflecting the purity of their motives when answering our country's call to arms. There is a single rose in a vase--reminding us of the lives of each of the missing and of their loved ones and friends who keep the faith. The vase is tied with a red ribbon--representing the love of country that inspired them to answer our nation's call. There is a yellow candle tied with a yellow ribbon--this is our everlasting hope for a joyous reunion with those not yet accounted for. A slice of lemon rests on the bread plate--the bitter fate of those captured or missing in a far away, foreign land. A pinch of salt lies on the bread plate--this symbolizes the tears shed by their families. A black napkin is on the table--standing for the emptiness these warriors have left in the hearts of their families and friends. The wine glass is inverted--our comrades cannot join us in our toasts this evening. A Bible rests on the table--a symbol of our faith in a higher power and the pledge to our country, founded as one nation under God. The American Flag is present--we mourn the fact that many of our comrades will not return to our shores, and we pay tribute to their passing. And finally, the chair is empty. Our comrades cannot join us at our festivities tonight. They are missing. For all who are fortunate to be here tonight, may we always remember: It is the soldier, sailor, airman, and marine, not the reporter, who have given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, sailor airman, and marine, not the poet, who have given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, sailor, airman, and marine, not the campus organizer, who have given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, sailor, airman, and marine, not the lawyer, who have given us the right to a fair trial. And... It is the soldier, sailor, airman, and marine who salutes the flag, serves under the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag.

BOODLE PARTY - OCTOBER 2005

Boodle boxes are sent to our midshipmen to encourage them during final exams. All midshipmen with parents that have paid membership dues receive boodle boxes.

The October Boodle Party was held on October 8th and was hosted by the clubs presidents in Glen Carbon, Illinois.

PARENTS WEEKEND/ACCEPTANCE DAY - SEPTEMBER 2005

Having earned the right to become Plebe Candidates by surviving the regimental rigors of Indoctrination, and having proved themselves capable to adapt not only to regimental life but a heavy academic load as well, Plebe Candidates now become Plebes.  Parents Weekend/Acceptance Day is when the Plebe Candidates are formally accepted as Plebes into the Regiment.  This is probably the most important event for parents to attend, other than graduation.

Class of 2009 Parents Weekend/Acceptance Day was held September 16 -18, 2005.  As of September 15th, 266 of the 285 Candidates that reported in on July 8 remain enrolled.

Next years Parents Weekend/Acceptance Day will be held Labor Day Weekend, September 1 through 3, 2006.

The next step will be for the Plebes to become 4th Classmen.  In order to do this, the class as a whole must prove to the first classmen that they are united as a class in Spirit, Knowledge, and Pride in the school.  When the First Class believes the class as a whole is ready, they are accepted into  the Regiment of Midshipmen by the upperclassmen and "recognized" as fourth classmen.  This usually occurs around March.

INDOC - JULY 2005

The Class of 2009 Candidates reported for indoctrination (indoc) on July 8, 2005.  Candidates that survive the regimental rigors of Indoctrination will become Plebe Candidates.

It was a rainy day when the approximately 285 Candidates reported in.  A partial profile of the Class of 2009 Candidates consists of 84% of the Candidates having earned High School Varsity Letters, the Average grade was A-, 10% were female, and their average SAT was 1228.

For those that make it through indoc and become Plebe Candidates, the next step will be in September when they are accepted as Plebes into the Regiment.

LUNCHEON - JUNE 2005
The annual Incoming Midshipman’s Luncheon for the Class of 2009 was held on June 25, 2005.  28 people attended (6 plebes, 2 graduates, and 20 parents).  It was hosted by the Chicago yacht club on the lakefront, in Chicago.  Greg Miller coordinated the event and Robert Rentner published and distributed an Information handbook to all attendees.  Alumni Warren Marwedel, Class of 1966; and recent graduate Chris Rentner, Class of 2005, spoke to everyone about what to expect at the Academy and fielded many questions from parents and incoming plebes.  The new President of the club, Maryann Jones, was introduced and shared a few words as well.  Incoming parents were reminded of how important it is to get involved in the parents’ organization, as it is through the strength and dedication of the membership that we can achieve what we do.  Everyone received attendance prizes and a good time was had by all.
