2011 Calendar Update

The class of 2013 is putting together a 2011 calendar of pictures taken by your sons and daughters during sea year. Please support the class of 2011. They only cost $15 and will fund the ring dance and the graduation ceremony. These calendars make perfect holiday gifts for the New Year, and help support your local midshipmen. If you would like to order a calendar, please send an emailto:timothy.buxton.2013@usmma.edu

Let him know how many via email, and they will be delivered to your state's association over winter break in time for the holidays.

2010 L.A. / Long Beach Blue & Gray Golf Classic

You are invited to play golf at the L.A. / Long Beach Blue & Gray Golf Classic for the season finale of the 2010 Heidmar Blue & Gray Golf Classics on November 15.

All proceeds benefit the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and its Department of Athletics. The proceeds are restricted to the USMMA Athletics Department from the USMMA Alumni Foundation. With the rising costs of intercollegiate athletics, the money is spread throughout the entire department to enhance the programs and support the men and women midshipmen athletes. Virtually every sport has benefited in some capacity from the proceeds of the Heidmar Blue & Gray Golf Classics.

2010 Southern California USMMA Graduation Awards

Andrea Marie Morrison, Riverside, CA  received the “National American Legion Award” for contributing to the success of the USMMA Color Guard.  She received a check for $400. 

2010 Merchant Marine Academy graduate , Joseph Taylor Martinet has received the “2010  Matthew I. De Luca, Sr. Award.”  He was selected based on his demonstrated scholastic excellence in “Ship Chartering and Operations” combined with his outstanding qualities of hard work, integrity and humility. Martinet, a resident of Mission Viejo, is a Marine Transportation major. He received a $1000 check, USMMA clock and his name will appear on a perpetual plaque outside Ackerman Auditorium.

Help Needed to Pack Care Packages for our MIDS!

Please join us for our annual mid packing party on Saturday, Feb. 20th at 11:00 am. Grandparents and siblings are encouraged to attend!

We are going to pack care packages for our sons and daughters and have lunch.

Many have asked what to bring?  If you would like to make a home – made snack that would be great. Cookies, rice crispy bars, brownies are appreciated.   We are packing 36 boxes for our mids.  Please let me know if you are going to bring a homemade snack for the mids.

The 30th Annual Southern California All Academies Ball is scheduled for Saturday, December 26, 2009 at the Anaheim Marriott.

The ball is open to Academy midshipmen, parents, extended family, alumni, and friends, the cost is about $70/ per person. Cost for mids is $30.

Activities: dancing, silent auction, dinner, cake cutting, etc…

Calling for Parent Volunteers to Help Plan the Dec. 26th Ball

WE need someone to attend the planning meetings, help find auction items and we desperately need help finding a guest speaker for the evening! We need a parent representative from the USMMA So. Cal Parent’s Association to serve on the ball committee, is anyone willing to serve on the committee?  The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 4th in Fullerton at 3:00 PM.  We are looking for a guest speaker, if you know someone famous - please help us make this the best ball ever.  If you are interested please CLICK HERE.

Thanks to all of the Southern California USMMA families who helped out at the packing party.  We had a great time and shared lots of amazing stories of our Mids.  42 packages crammed with homemade cookies and other goodies were packed and mailed, due to arrive the week of finals.  Way to support our Mids!!!!  Special thanks to Terry and Rande Johnsen for buying a ton of goodies, hosting the packing party and hosting a wonderful lunch!!!

Erik Johnsen,Named Landmark Conference Swimmer Of The Week
February 17, 2009


Sophomore Erik Johnsen of the United States Merchant Marine Academy men’s swimming and diving team was named the Landmark Conference Swimmer of the Week. The announcement was made by the conference office on Monday morning. This is the first time that a men’s swimming and diving team member has been honored by the conference.   Johnsen was named the Swimmer of the Year at the Landmark Swimming & Diving Championships as he helped the Mariners repeat as champions. Johnsen won three individual events at the meet, placing first in the 500 freestyle, the 1,650 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. His times in each event were the fastest in the conference this season, and his winning time of 51.25 to win 100 fly is an NCAA provisional qualifying time.   The Mariners return to action on Friday, February 20th when they compete in the Metropolitan Championships.

Southern California All Military Academies Ball

The Southern California Naval Academy Parent Association hosted the ball on Friday, December 26th at the Anaheim Marriot.  Hugh Hewitt was the guest speaker, and many USMMA parents and midshipmen attended. A special thank you to Rande & Terry Johnsen for donating items for the silent auction and for assembling the goody bags for our cadets in attendance.
